GloPoWriMo 2021 - Day One!

Here we are again.

softly churning, properly yearning, watching the dog sleep.

Here we are again,

up the spiral, next rung, a year forward, steps further, moving along.

Here we are again,

reclaiming, regaining, remembering, reminding, remining, re-ing.

Here we are again,

at the latest beginning, the newest start, the fresh shot.

Here we are again,

trying.

Day 6

Last night I read my poems as a part of a collaboration with a fantastic band called bluedirtgirl. It was such a gift to share my work this way. I love to speak my poems out loud, it’s my favourite thing to do. I didn’t manage to write a poem as the whole day was taken up with freaking out and other life gack, so I’m writing one now.

EATING PIZZA WITH A DRUMMER

does he experience everything in rhythm?
is walking distracting
is he bored with a basic beat
is it variation he seeks?
is it hard to think straight
when he is translating,
when he cannot control the pattern?
the patter pat tap tapper

the sun is warm this evening
and all the colours are bright
the city murals pop out like smarties
in the sky, eye candy

as we walk up the hill
munching pizza
under budding trees
his words are quick
but they are like a skin
of necessary humanness
stretched taut over
a deep chamber of curiosities

Day 5 - Toe gazing

TOEING THE EARTH

I painted my nails the colour of sky
so every time I look down
I can see space between my toes

Making it specific, following the prompt today

NaPoWriMo.net offers a prompt each day to get you going, sometimes I use them, sometimes I don’t. Today I did. Using concrete nouns as much as possible to describe an abstract idea.

Stress Release

Bucking hooves stomp the paddock
dust balloons up, lingering
nostrils flare
eyeballs roll
glistening hide ripples
just barely holding in
the burst of muscle

The sky cracks and leaks drops
giant mud-making plops
calming nothing
fenceposts rattle
mouth foams

This corral of flesh
can’t hold back the gallop
brewing within
much longer

Day Three - Dealing with being nervous

A NAPKIN NAMED TODAY

A dog sniffs at a napkin
nosing it around the pavement
teeth ready but not so sure
if someone spat up goodness
into the folds
      or something worse
or is the substance, the paper, the square of tissueness
enough?

soon the odors of the ground
mingle with the napkin
and the multiplicity
of possibility
finally equals palatability

bite chew tear rip
snarl scramble chase
sniff grunt shred
do not share
mine

‘come, dog.’

and release
       napkin not worth eating
       but a good sniff
       passes the time

Day Two - When the Bough Breaks

And then the bough breaks
and the conversation falls
crashing tumbling
   to the earth
      where we roll
           in the loss
              of forgetting
                   to talk
                       for all those days.

And the rotting sod beneath us
is tilled again with our words
and we look up to the clearing
above us and laugh
about how hard it all was
to balance
in the silence of the canopy

despite ourselves we will climb again
and hope to remember
how falling taught us
                         to speak

The Return: I have a blog I forgot I started!

I’m back and participating in Glo/NaPoWriMo (Global Poetry Writing Month) again this year!
One poem a day for the month of April. Let’s do this.

Captain’s Poem - April 1, 2018

When Your Book Arrives - dedicated to a friend who makes magic in the kitchen

When your book arrives in the mail
I will put the kettle on
I will settle in over tea
And survey the pages
you have touched with
your pacing meticulous mind
I will rest in your words
and sneak into the pictures
tasting
         sensing
                  listening

My tea may get cold

because your recipes
are more than instructions
they are tales
from which
the light of life
is born
